Environment

Befimmo aims to mitigate, protect and prevent environmental threats now and in the long term.
Our ambition: to have a strategy that is compatible with the transition to a sustainable economy and with limiting global warming to 1.5°C and that contributes to the objective of making the EU climate neutral by 2050, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
To achieve this ambition, we have developed a strategy focused on several targets and actions. Three of them were considered as material by our 2024 double materiality assessment and are developed more extensively in our ESG report : Climate change; Water and marine resources; Resource use and circular economy. Even if they were not deemed as material, we are still paying close attention to other sustainability issues like building certifications, biodiversity, as well as mobility and accessible buildings.

Climate change
We aim to reduce our absolute scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by equipping our buildings with telemonitoring for energy consumption, and improving energy performance, operational footprint and part of the renewable energy production consumed by our portfolio.
The assessment of our buildings’ climate risk and vulnerability is essential and will allow us to take the necessary measures to protect the buildings that are at high or medium risk levels, as well as their occupants.
Even if urban areas are already highly developed, leaving minimal natural ecosystems to conserve or enhance, Befimmo still acts to protect biodiversity. A specific example is the gradual adaptation of existing maintenance contracts for Befimmo’s sites green spaces to eliminate the use of herbicides, generalise the use of indigenous species and maximise flower prairies.
Water and marine resources
Telemonitoring incoming water and analysing data to identify anomalies in our buildings is critical to face persistent droughts putting a huge strain on Europe’s water supplies and on its quality.
Resource use and circular economy
Carrying out an inventory of the existing material to identify reusable, retainable and recyclable materials is essential to reduce the production of waste and the use of ressources related to renovation and construction.
Building certification
We aim to strengthen and improve selection criteria for building materials used during our renovation and construction to reduce the price on society and ecosystems.
Mobility and accessible buildings
Proposing accessible buildings is key for users and team members in order to shift towards a more active mobility and therefore decarbonise our ecosystem.
